Project Description

Summary:  View help for Summary This study assessed the degree to which adult drug treatment courts impact county-level drug possession arrests using a stacked event study desing. Materials included here serve as supplements to the article "Adult Drug  Treatment Courts and Community-Level Drug Possession Arrests" submitted to the journal Crime & Delinquency in March of 2022.

Materials include:
- Stata code for data cleaning and setup, core analysis, counterfactual analysis, and robustness checks
- Analysis data with county FIPS codes anonymized
- PDF supplemental materials for the paper: additional tables and graphs, methods appendix, and data appendix

The code may be adapted for use in other contexts but identification of individual counties has been masked in the data to protect use of the treatment court data until fully released to the public.

Scope of Project

Geographic Coverage:  View help for Geographic Coverage Most counties in the United States
Time Period(s):  View help for Time Period(s) 1990 – 2018

Methodology

Sampling:  View help for Sampling This dataset is built upon the UCR Summary Reporting Arrest data concatenated by Jacob Kaplan (https://www.openicpsr.org/openicpsr/project/102180/version/V11/view). To minimize measurement error, data cleaning started with UCR reporting agencies which reported all 12 months per year for the entirety of each stack (see Methods Appendix for clarification). Agencies were collapsed to the county level, then other data were merged in.
Data Source:  View help for Data Source UCR Summary Reporting Arrest data were attained from https://www.openicpsr.org/openicpsr/project/102180/version/V11/view

Treatment court data come from a purpose-built dataset that has not yet been released for public use.

County-level demographic data were gathered from the NIH SEER dataset.

Unemployment data include those provided by the US Labor Department in the LAUS.

Other information merged in include county size in square miles (to calculate population density) and presidential vote proportions (interpolated in off years weighted by proximity to election year).
