Project Description

Summary: This dataset contains measures of the number and per capita density of education and training services per United States ZIP code tabulation area (ZCTA) from 2003 through 2017. This includes traditional education establishments such as elementary schools, secondary schools, and colleges, as well as businesses offering specialized training such as art classes, driving instruction, computer training, and standardized test preparation.

Collection Notes: A ZIP code to ZCTA crosswalk must be used to combine this dataset with ZIP code geocoded data. Such a crosswalk is available on the UDS Mapper website at https://udsmapper.org/zip-code-to-zcta-crosswalk/. Sample code for merging the UDS Mapper crosswalk with NaNDA datasets is available on the NaNDA repository at https://www.openicpsr.org/openicpsr/project/120088/.

Methodology

Data Source:

The 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS, https://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/sssd/naics/naicsrch?chart=2017) was used to identify organizations of interest.
Establishment data was taken from the 2017 National Establishment Time Series (NETS) database.
ZCTAs for establishments, as well as land area per ZCTA, were determined using the 2019 version of the US TIGER/Line shapefiles (https://www2.census.gov/geo/tiger/TIGER2019/ZCTA5/tl_2019_us_zcta510.zip).
ZCTA population figures for 2000-2010 are drawn from the 2000 decennial US Census (https://www2.census.gov/census_2000/datasets/Summary_File_3/) and the 2012 American Community Survey (ACS) five-year estimate (https://www2.census.gov/acs2012_5yr/summaryfile/).
Population figures for 2011-2017 were obtained from the NaNDA dataset Socioeconomic Status and Demographic Characteristics of ZIP Code Tabulation Areas, United States, 2008-2017 (https://www.openicpsr.org/openicpsr/project/120462/).
