This repository includes patent data constructed from the Annual Reports of the Commissioner of Patents and Annual Indices of Patents for the years 1870-1941.
We construct and use this data in our paper "Changes in the Demographics of American Inventors, 1870-1940." For replication codes and patent data matched to the U.S. population census, see the project "American Inventors, 1870-1940" (https://doi.org/10.3886/E109970V2).
The folder "Raw" contains .txt files OCRed from the Annual Reports. The folder "Parsed" contains .dta files with inventor and patent information parsed from these text files. READ_ME.txt explains the data in more detail.
If you have questions, please contact Mike Andrews (mandrews@nber.org).
