Project Description
Scope of Project
The data collected in this study are from direct cold calling, as well as a result of online surveys completed by individuals who received an interactive voice response (IVR) survey. The cold calling was conducted from Monday June 29th – Wednesday July 29th, 2020. In total, 11, 221 lines were called from cold calling. It is unknown how many of these lines were active (ie. Lines that either generated an answer, no answer, or a voicemail machine), or nonactive (ie. Due to congestion, busy signal, or not being an active number).
Of the IVR survey, a total of 110, 430 active lines were called, and 35, 766 lines were nonactive. A total of 19, 581 respondents answered the phone, with a contact rate of 18%. The IVR survey also generated 68 leads, which are respondents who wish to complete the survey with a live surveyor. In addition, to the cold calls of lines, these individuals were also contacted by live survey callers. A separate response rate was not tracked for these individuals. A total of 88 surveys were completed from both cold calling and individuals identified in the IVR survey as wishing to be contacted by a live caller. A total of 252 IVR respondents requested to have the survey text messaged to them so they could complete it online. Of those individuals, 13 people completed the survey online. (ie. Leads and text message survey option). A total of 101 people completed the survey either with a live caller or online.
This survey was approved by the Conestoga College Research Ethics Board.
Survey Details
The Survey was performed through Interactive Voice Response (IVR) survey, as well as cold calling, conducted by Professor Anthony Piscitelli with assistance from Public Service co-op students at Conestoga College. The survey was funded by a grant from The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).
Sampling Approach
The sample was created by randomly selecting Waterloo Region landlines as listed in a digital phone book. A sample of likely cellphone numbers was added by randomly selecting phone numbers that according to the Canadian Numbering Administrator that were originally assigned to Waterloo Region. Phone numbers of businesses were filtered out of randomly selected phone numbers. Sampling error exists due to the mismatch that is created by the random dialing of phone numbers as opposed to randomly sampling actual Waterloo Region residents.
